Ultra Run 2023: Rental Cars

There are a limited number of cars on island which occasionally sell out. For the best rates & options,  we suggest reserving your car 4-6 months in advance.  A standard size car will suffice, except where noted.

Special Rates & Tips

  • Cars should be reserved in the driver’s name, not the athlete.
  • Most rental car companies offer a free membership in their loyalty program to help expedite your pickup. The idea is that you provide the credit card & driver license in advance, and then either go straight to the car, or to a special line upon arrival. We strongly suggest this to help save time. With Avis, it’s called Avis Preferred.  With Budget, it’s called Fastbreak. 
  • Due to the nature of the event, we do not recommend pre-payment.
  • We have event discount codes available for Budget & Avis. These generally save 30-50% if booked in advance. Discount codes are as follows:
    • Avis – AWD X169735
    • Budget – BCD V009694
  • Costco Travel – Often the best rates though membership is required
  • Priceline – We often find that Priceline has the best rates around. They operate like a normal rental car reservation & bidding is not required.
  • AutoSlash – Once you have made your reservations, we recommend registering them with AutoSlash, a service that will continuously check rates & let you know if prices drop so you can get a better rate.   NOTE: This service will not work with Turo, or if you have pre-paid and unable to cancel/change your reservation. 

Kauai (LIH)

Pickup: Saturday, Sept 30 or whenever you arrive on Kauai
Return: Monday Oct 2, 5pm

Kauai is a small airport & there is a 2 minute shuttle to the Rental Car lot, or walk-able in about 5 minutes. Turo has a separate shuttle and is about a 7-8 minute ride away.

Oahu (HNL)

Pickup: Monday, Oct 2, 6:30pm
Return: Tuesday, Oct 3, 4:30pm

Honolulu is a large international airport. There is usually a wait for the shuttle, then a 10 minute ride to the Rental Car lot. Expect the whole process to take 30-60 minutes. Pre-registered loyalty members can often skip the line and go straight to your car.

Maui (OGG)

Pickup: Tuesday, Oct 3, 6:30pm
Return: Thursday, Oct 5, 4:30pm

Maui is a larger airport, not nearly as big as Honolulu though.  There is often a short wait for the train, then a 2 minute ride to the rental car center. Alternately, it’s about a 7 minute walk.  Pre-registered loyalty members can often skip the line and go straight to your car.

Most of the course should be fine in a standard car. There are a couple spots where a 4 wheel drive could be helpful, but not required.

This reservation will overlap with Lanai.

Lanai (LNY)

Pickup: Wednesday, Oct 4, 8:00am
Return: Wednesday, Oct 4, 5:00pm

We are arriving & departing at the ferry docks. There are no mainstream rental car companies on this island. 4 wheel drive is necessary to provide support on the course.  We recommend Turo. Check the details, many are unable to come to the docks & you will need to pickup in Lanai City. Let us know if this is the case and we can help with shuttle service.  

Please share the course map with the rental car owner to ensure they are ok with the car going on these off-roads. 

Lanai Cheap Jeeps is an option in town. 

 

Hilo (ITO)

Pickup: Thursday, Oct 5, 6;30pm
Return: Saturday, Oct 7, or when you depart

Many US mainland flights are more direct from Kona (KOA) so book your flight home before your car rental reservation on this island so that you can book accordingly.  If you are returning to KOA instead of ITO, as many of us are, you may find costco.com travel section to have the best rates. Many agencies charge a $150+ fee for the one way rental.
